Keepers Licence Conditions Explained!

 

There is cureently a high non compliance rate with reptile keepers in relation to the 18 conditions stated on their licence.

 

A lot of this appears to be the conditions are not descriptive enough so we have broken down each licence condition and detailed what it actually means. Simply click on the licence condition you would like to enquire abour for a simple breakdown.

 

Please note while there is a high non compliance rate there is little chance there will ever be any changes made to the current herpetofauna keeping system.


 

Herpetofauna Keepers Licence Conditions

1. The Licensee shal comply with the provisions of the wildlife conservation act 1950, wildliferegulations 1970 and wildlife conservation (reptile and amphibian keeping) regulations 2002 and any notices and schedules in force under the act and these regulations.

2.The licensee must comply with all relevant local authority by-laws

3.Quarterly returns shall be submitted to this department so as to be received within fifteen (15) days of each quarterly period and shal list details of all fauna purchased, sold, born or died. Returnsshall be marked to the attention of the wildlife licencing (pet reptile and amphibian) officer. If no transactions, births or deaths have occured, a return must still be submitted which details numbers of animals on hand.

4.The licensee shall at all times provide adequate and appropriate care in accordance with animal care heet specifications

5.The licensee shal ensure that the fauna listed below are kept under secure (locked for category 5 species) confinement at all times in accordance with animal care sheet specifications

6.the fauna listed below shal not be kept in the bedrooms or bathrooms of the licensees dwellin premises.

7.The fauna listed below shall not be displayed to the general public.

8.No fauna kept under the provisions of this licence is to be released into the wild .

9. No species or subspecies kept under the provisions of this licence is to be allowed to inter-breed under any circumstances

10. If any animal under this licence dies or is lost. The licensee must inform the wildlife licencing (pet reptile and amphibian) officer, in writing, of the species type/name, identification number, time, date and cause of death or  loss within 72 hours. Dead fauna are to be individually tagged or labelled with identification &/or specimen number and preserved in alcoho or frozen as soon as possible after death. They are to be kept by the locensee untill authorised by the department of disposal options

11. No fauna held under this licence is to be disposed of untill at least three (3) months from the date of purchase or birth of the fauna.

12.All fauna held under this licence shall only be held at the premises listed on this licence, except when being treated by a registered veternarian surgeon, or enroute to a licenced reptile and amphibian dealer, a licensed reptile and amphibian farmer or as otherwise authorised by the executive director.

13. No live vertebrate animals are to be used as food for pet herpetofauna held under this licence.

14. Not withstanding condition 12, any fauna held under this licence shall be disposed of only to a licenced reptile and amphibian dealer

15. The licensee may sell to a licenced dealer no more than one clutch bred from any species specefied on this licence in any calender year. If the licessee wishes to sell more than one clutch from any species in any calender year, he/she must first apply for and obtain a licence to farm reptiles and amphibians as pets

16. The licensee shal record details (in duplicate) of all transactions, births, deaths or escapes of all fauna held under this licence on the approved record sheet as they occur, and shal submit one copy as per condition 3 and retain the duplicate, and make the duplicate available to a wildlife officer on demand.

17.The licensee is to comply with any lawful instruction made by a wildlife officer at all times.

18. The locensee must, when requested to do so by an authorised wildlife officer, allow the wildlife officer to inspect any pet herpetofauna to which this licence relates and to inspect the property where the herpetofauna is kept
